The first Hindu member of Pakistan parliament

Mahesh Kumar Malani has been elected as the first Hindu to become the member of the Pakistan National Assembly. He got more than 100,000 votes in a seat in the Sindh province of Pakistan People’s Party.

Since the birth of Pakistan, minorities did not have the right to contest elections. They used to go to Parliament only after being nominated candidates for different political parties in reserved seats. In 2002, the constitution was amended by the then Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf. Then, in the last 16 years, any Hindu candidate went to Pakistan’s parliament for the first time. Mahesh Kumar Malani has long been associated with politics in Pakistan for a long time. From 2003 to 2008, Mahesh Kumar Malani was a nominated member of the minority reserved seats in Pakistan’s parliament. Prior to this, he was a member of the Standing Committee of the Sindhu provincial meeting. Source: PTI
